Numbered 'No.3', this plate illustrates a witty courtroom scene related to marriage and divorce in late 19th-century France. The black transferware design includes decorative elements with symbolic references to law, marriage, and separation.

Marked on the back with the Creil et Montereau stamp and impressed number '90'. The piece dates to circa 1875–1890.
