A rare and visually striking antique papier-mâché wall letter holder, beautifully hand-painted with a dynamic battle scene featuring samurai warriors in full armor. Created in Europe in the late 19th century during the height of the Japonisme movement, this piece captures the drama and detail of traditional Japanese war art with lacquer-like precision and rich golden tones.
The holder is made from lacquered papier-mâché, a lightweight yet durable material prized in the 1800s for decorative arts. The surface is adorned with high-contrast colors and detailed figures, evoking the spirit of Japanese ukiyo-e battle prints and maki-e lacquerwork.
With its elegant scalloped form and twin hanging holes, this piece once served as a letter or document holder, and today makes an exceptional wall-mounted objet d’art. A visible crack on the back does not affect its striking front presentation and only adds to the antique authenticity.
